Waitakere City Athletic Club - West Auckland
60th Jubilee
The Waitakere City Athletic Club has a record of which it can be truly proud. Over the past 60 years, 47 of our club members have won 124 New Zealand championships and set 53 New Zealand records while 29 of our athletes have represented New Zealand in international competitions.

Our club’s first national champion and record holder was Joe Antunovich. Joe won the New Zealand junior men’s discus title in 1966 then completed the national junior men’s shot-discus double in 1967. That season (1966-67) he also raised the New Zealand junior men’s discus record to 57.56m with the1.5kg weight implement.
Joe went on to complete an architectural degree at the University of Southern California where he competed on the university’s track and field team. In 1970 he became our club’s first New Zealand representative competing at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games finishing seventh in the discus.

Gary Henley-Smith is our club’s most prolific New Zealand champion and record holder. Gary won ten national championships over 100m and 200m – six in the Colt’s (under 17) grade and four as a senior. – and set eleven national records in the colts’, junior men’s and senior grades. Gary spent four years at Washington State University before returning to New Zealand.

Gary represented New Zealand in the 4 x 100m relay at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland.
Our club has two Olympians and 10 Commonwealth Games representatives.

Cameron Taylor competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games where he set a New Zealand 200m record, 20.83s, in the second round and Beatrice Faumuina, who competed in the discus at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing after joining our club the previous year.

Our club’s ten Commonwealth Games representatives are Joe Antunovich (1970), Pan Hendren, Kim Robertson and Janine Robson (1982), Kim Petersen, Cassandra Kelly and Gary Henley-Smith (1990), Zion Armstrong (1998), and Beatrice Faumuina and Elizabeth Lamb (2010).
